A Nigerian alleged to be a supporter of the Al-Qaeda terror group in the Arabian Peninsula, Lawal Babafemi, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for providing support to a designated terrorist organisation under American laws.
In 2014, Babafemi pleaded guilty to the charges, after being extradited from Nigeria, and he was sentenced on Wednesday to 22 years by District Judge John Gleeson in Brooklyn, New York.
The Reuters news agency reported that Babafemi, 35, from January 2010 to August 2011, travelled from Nigeria to Yemen twice to meet Al-Qaeda leaders and worked on the group’s media operations, including its magazine.
He also wrote rap lyrics about jihad, and received up to $9,000 from terrorist leaders to recruit other Nigerians, prosecutors said.
