In a letter to the presidents and general secretaries of the 209 FIFA members, the 60-year-old declared: “This was a very personal and well thought out decision where I have weighted up the future of football alongside my own future. I was convinced by the appreciation, support and the encouragement that has been shown to me by many of you.” He says that he wants to work tirelessly in the interest of football.
